Snow Day

It really snowed here! LOTS of snow! although i was sick as a dog, i got to take some pictures from my back porch. Here's one of my micro-house (ok, it's a shack) and circular garden under construction.

The Famous Pantone 292

i spent quite a lot of time at home during the holidays, working on some sign jobs and listening to 69 Love Songs Volume 1 by The Magnetic Fields over and over. i like to listen to music that way. So in the spirit of that CD and the post-Christmas/mid-winter doldrums, here is Pantone Blue 292, my gift to you, dear reader.

Jesus Loves Pirates

I like the lettering on this church sign in Murphy,NC. It's part gothic, part pirate...not really churchy at all. Maybe they'd done the Christian thing and hired an out of work reformed pirate sign painter to make it for them. If anyone can decipher the last 2 lines, please let me know.

How the eye sees color

Last week i broke my glasses while i was in the mountains and had to use scotch tape to keep one of the lenses from falling out. Today i was supposed to superglue them back together, but since that means not having my glasses on for an hour or so, i have procrastinated. Instead i spent the afternoon spelunking on the internet and reading about things like why colorblindness is more prevalent among men and how the eye sees color.

These must be experienced in person, so if you live in Athens, please don't miss this show. They are huge (about 10' long) micrographs, digitally stitched together from multiple (FEI)field emission gun scans (more commonly known as (SEM)Scanning Electron Microscope scans). Close-up views of nano forms that so resemble landscapes or moonscapes, you'll expect to see the tail fins of a lunar lander in the corner. Michael is head of digital media at UGA, a designer with ADD (Athens Design Development) and is emerging as an important American artist in the field of digital media.

Keith Thurman's new mural on Broad st.

New mural in Athens
Next to a big empty field where Kudzu Coffee used to be on Broad St, by the BP gas station at the corner of Evans and Dearing Ext., is a new mural going up. Keith Thurman is painting the back wall of what is going to be a jazz club, and intends to paint the entire building eventually. It's a beautiful expression of the neighborhood and not far from the sculpture garden at Colima Ave & Rose St.

ADD's CLR

Here is the CLR (cigarette litter receptacle) designed by my group ADD for the city of Athens.


They'll be installing them on parking meters all over downtown at the end of this week, April 10 & 11. We have a little display up at the Lyndon House that explains our design and collaborative process with the city.


If you must smoke, please use these receptacles. Cigarette butts aren't biodegradable and when thrown on the ground, they get washed into storm drains and into lakes and streams.

The Butterfly and the Abstract

i found this butterfly at the park this evening, on the ground incapacitated by the cold snap, and brought it home.


it just happens to match the painting i'm working on. i don't know if it's auspicious or just serendipitous, but i'm quite excited.

Before and After Patriotism...

Possibly the funniest thing i've seen in a long while. The doors of a former church (now art studios) located at Hill & Chase Street with one of my Chrysanthemums on painted on it. Apparently the studio renter didn't like my flower, but he loves flags.

Magenta

The history of the color Magenta is more interesting than i'd realized. Here's a link to read about it in Stir magazine where you will learn that "magenta is a mixture of red and blue wavelengths that cannot be generated by a single wavelength of light" which i didn't know but i'm not surprised. Also this excellent article by Liz Elliot in the Journal of Unlikely Science goes even further to explain the mad science behind the color.
